Item #1382

Frank Faulkner was among the most respected writers on scientific brewing during the late 19th century, making his first significant contribution to brewing literature with The Art of Brewing in 1876. This 1888 volume is the second edition of his popular Theory and Practice of Modern Brewing, made necessary, as Faulkner explained, by a variety of changes in English brewing, among them an increase in demand for lighter beers, and changing technology inside the brewery. The book is a wonderful snapshot of practical brewing in the late 1800s, as impacted by changes in market forces, raw materials, scientific advances, and technology.

The book was published by F.W. Lyon, the same establishment that published England's leading trade journal, The Brewers' Journal. The book includes about 25 wonderful advertisements at the rear of the book for maltsters, brewery architects, brewing equipment manufacturers, etc.
