As soon as it became clear that the 18th Amendment would be ratified and National Prohibition would become a reality, Carl A. Nowak published New Fields for Brewers. Nowak, secretary of the Master Brewers' Association of the United States, outlined a number of product lines to which brewers could easily adapt their brewing facilities, and hopefully minimize the great financial loss that Prohibition would otherwise bring to brewery owners. Interestingly, Nowak (like many others) believed that Prohibition would be repealed almost immediately, and, thus, he characterized the ideas in his book as being mere temporary measures, necessary only long enough to preserve one's brewing plant until the brief national nightmare was over. He wrote, "While National Prohibition, forced upon the people of this country by a minority of the population through constitutional amendment, can at its best be only transitory in its results, it may, nevertheless, lead to a wholesale destruction of property and the throwing out of employment of thousands of trained men, unless ways and means are found to substitute, at least temporarily, other fields of manufacture closely associated with [brewing] and in which the specialized experience accumulated in years of practice, may be profitably employed." It is interesting to note that many of the brewers who were able to survive Prohibition did so by making many of the products named in the book's Chapter List below. At the end of the book appears a multi-page advertising section, in which the reader could find ads for some of the equipment and supplies suggested by the book. Chapter List: • Introduction
