Here is a collection of 9 issues of The Brewer & Maltster -- a brewing industry trade journal published in Chicago for nearly 40 years before National Prohibition. Each issue contains 130 to 150 pages -- about half of which consist of beautiful old advertisements targeted at brewers. The ads cover virtually every aspect of brewing: maltsters, coopers, kegging & bottling machinery, copper & wood vats, brewery architects & engineers, brewers grits and various ingredients, bungs & corks, pumps, bar fixtures, refrigerating equipment, and so on. The remaining pages are, of course, the text of the trade journal, containing all sorts of industry news and well-illustrated articles discussing just about every facet of brewing and the beer business. Early trade journals like these are a direct window into the day-to-day operations of the typical pre-prohibition American brewery, as well as the issues and concerns of owners and managers. For historical value, they simply are unmatched. And what fun they are to read! It's like taking a walk back through a brewery of nearly 100 years ago. Although the ads and the text are written entirely in English, each issue does contain a German section of approximately 20-25 pages, in which are repeated the highlights of the journal for German-speaking readers.
