What a stunning artifact of American brewing history! It is a 175-page commemorative book from the 1899 convention of brewmasters held in New York City. On the maroon cover is a beautiful gilt-stamped emblem which reads, "Souvenir Der Elften Convention Des Vereinigte Staaten Braumeister-Bundes abgehalten in New York September 1899" (translation: Souvenir of the Eleventh Convention of the United States Brewmasters Association held in New York September 1899). Naturally, the book is written entirely in German, as were nearly all publications of the U.S. Brewmasters Association before prohibition. Inside, the book begins with portraits of the U.S. Brewmasters Association officers and directors, followed by a program of the convention proceedings, then a pictorial roster of the members of the New York and vicinity brewmasters association. Next is a brief history of the city of New York, illustrated with gorgeous full-page photographs of New York landmarks like Battery Park, Brooklyn Bridge, Washington Square, Madison Square, Central Park and others. In all, there are more than 20 photos of New York City. But the heart of the book is the dozens and dozens of beautiful advertisements. More than half of the ads are from New York and New Jersey breweries -- over 80 different breweries in all! Most are very handsome full-page ads, and many include large illustrations of their brewery buildings or products. (See the incredible list of brewery ads below.) The rest of the ads are for a wide variety of brewing supplies, equipment, services, etc. It is a striking collection of late 1800s brewing industry material.
