Historian William Downard published this, the first significant history of brewing in Cincinnati, in 1973. It remains today a valuable historical look at one of the great American beer cities. Downard begins the story with the city's first commercial brewery in 1811 and follows the dramatic rise of Cincy's breweries up to National Prohibition, when some twenty-five breweries were forced to cease brewing. The book's final chapter chronicles the resurrection of brewing after repeal, and traces the industry's development up through the 1960s. Of special interest is the discussion of Cincinnati's famed Over-the-Rhine district, where numerous beer gardens served the city's predominantly German population. The book includes a nice photo section, bibliography and full index.
