Here is a 1914 first edition copy of Max Henius's "Danish Beer and Continental Beer Gardens." At the 1913 convention of the United States Brewers' Association in Atlantic City, Dr. Max Henius delivered an illustrated lecture entitled "Danish Beer and Continental Beer Gardens." Henius was associated with the well-regarded Chicago brewing school, the Wahl-Henius Institute of Fermentology. So well was the presentation received that the USBA thought it appropriate to publish the lecture in book format in 1914. Adding to the motivation to publish the work was the death of Denmark's leading brewer, Carl Jacobsen, in January of 1914. The book opens with a tribute to the deceased brewer. The Jacobsen name played a central role not only in the history of Danish brewing, but in brewing worldwide. Their story, and that of their famous Carlsberg Brewery in Copenhagen, accounts for a significant portion Henius's lecture. Henius says, "It was Captain J. C. Jacobsen who in 1840 introduced beer of the lager-beer or bottom fermented type [into Denmark]. Jacobsen always considered himself a pupil of Gabriel Sedlmayer, the famous Munich brewer, under whose guidance he learned the trade, and it was that training, together with his conviction that 'good vinous beer is the most efficient means to counteract and conquer the desire for spirits,' which governed him in revolutionizing the taste of the Danish people. The modern Danish lager beers are much lighter in alcohol than the older top-fermented kind, and have crowded the latter to the wall." The profusely illustrated book traces the story of brewing in Denmark, dwells heavily on the Jacobsen saga, then moves on to a discussion of beer gardens throughout Europe. LIST OF ILLUSTRATIONS:
