Hard Cover, 640 pages, 9.50 x 12.25 .
Item #1834

The full title of this book (in keeping with the Victorian-era tradition of marathon-length book titles) is: Brewers And Bottlers Universal Encyclopedia: A Complete Reference Book And Guide Embodying A Thorough And Comprehensive Description, With Illustrations Of Machines, Utensils And Supplies Of Every Nature Required By Modern Brewers And Bottlers In The Daily Conduct Of Their Business And Also Containing Valuable Information And Statistics Embracing Every Branch Of The Allied Trades.

I guess a title any shorter than that would not do full justice to this colossally-packed volume of illustrations and brewing history. The bulk of this 640-page hardcover book consists of detailed and well-illustrated advertisements from hundreds of different suppliers to the brewing industry—makers of everything from brew kettles to bung hammers. In its entirety, the book paints a vivid picture of the workings of a pre-Prohibition-era American brewery, from the largest equipment down to the very smallest detail.

The final 100 pages of the book consist of:

  • Dozens of charts and quick-reference tables that might be handy in the running of a brewery, or any factory.
  • A full Internal Revenue Guide for breweries.
  • Statistics of the brewing industry for 1909.
  • A complete list of breweries and their brewmasters in the United States, Canada and Mexico, arranged by state, then city.
  • A complete list and details of local and regional Brewmasters' associations/clubs in America.
  • Full index to the book.
