The print features a stunning illustration of the buildings that once constituted the largest brewery in America. Next to George Ehret's name is the Ehret brewery logo, a stylized five-point star, an image that was historically placed on the ends of beer barrels, and known as a "Brewer's Star." In the lower left corner appear the words "Hell Gate Brewery Established 1866." In the center bottom is a calendar for the year 1897. Originally, there would have been a calendar pad in this spot with tear-away monthly pages. |
| Note: | During a portion of the mid- to late-1800s, the George Ehret Brewery was the largest-producing beer company in America. George Ehret died in 1927. After Prohibition, the large brewery complex, located on the upper east side of Manhattan, was absorbed by its next-door neighbor, the Jacob Ruppert brewery. |
