Publisher: Gauthier-Villars, Paris, 1876.
Hard Cover, 387 pages, 6.75 x 9.75.
Item #1774

A first edition copy of Pasteur's Études sur la Bière, perhaps the most noteworthy brewing book of the 19th Century. Printed in French, of course. Discusses the practical problems of brewing and the micro-organisms of fermentation. Includes all the original plates. Mostly uncut and beautifully bound with original wrap inside.

» See the English translation.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This book has mostly uncut pages. In early book printing, books were often issued in a "virgin" state, with page edges not trimmed, but merely folded. The book buyer was then expected to slice the pages apart on his own, in order to read the book. Book collectors often covet books that remain in their uncut condition. Before buying, please understand the implications of this mostly uncut book. See pictures below showing uncut pages. There are videos available online that describe antique books with uncut pages. There are also instructions available for "opening" uncut pages, though most collectors agree that altering uncut pages can decrease a book's value.

Condition: Excellent. Original front wrap (see the orange sheet below) and text rebound in 1/4 light red morocco and marbled papered boards, gilt decorated spine with leather label by Dragonfly bindery. Pages show only light toning. All in all, excellent.
