Duis provides a unique look into the world of saloons in America -- socially, economically, statistically, etc. Although its focus is on saloons of Chicago and Boston, the bulk of its insights are applicable to saloons everywhere. There is a great deal of discussion about the relationship between saloons and breweries -- a topic which has been generally not well examined by historians, but which was a crucial part of the brewing industry before prohibition. This book helps greatly in filling the void on this particular aspect of brewing history. Its the only comprehensive study of saloons in America that I am aware of.
