More about this image...
Description:Print from 1879 depicting the "Allegorie [i.e Allegory] of Gambrinus." In the center panel is King Gambrinus, the mythical symbol of beer in Europe, sitting stop a horse. In the right panel are two women labeled "Germania," handing a goblet full of beer to Gambrinus. Waiting in the left panel are two women labeled as "America." The symbolism seems to be that Gambrinus will bring lager beer from Germany to America. Below the panels are the words "Lager Bier," i.e. Lager Beer. Near the bottom of the print are two figures, one holding barley stalks, apparently representing agriculture, and another holding a scientific instrument and brewing utensils, apparently representing the idea of brewing aided by science.
Date:1879
Media:Lithograph
