Full title: "The Theory and Practice of Brewing, by Michael Combrune, a Brewer. Printed with Permission of the Master, Wardens, and Court of Assistants of the Worshipful Company of Brewers."
Combrune is one of the most noted early brewer-authors. He was credited with being the first to apply the use of the thermometer in brewing, the details of which he enumerates in his books. He considered himself (and many agreed) to be "the first to attempt to bring rules, scientific principles, to what has been heretofore the Art of brewing."
This is the "New Edition, Correctly and Greatly Enlarged by the Author," published in 1804 in London. This copy has its original boards and spine, which is rare since early brewing texts like this one were often rebound by libraries or owners.
Condition: Very Good. Original boards are present, but spine has been professionally restored, as shown by the black strips outside and white strips inside. The restoration is excellent quality. Boards show general wear expected after 200+ years. On the inside cover is a bookplate showing that this copy once belonged to John Henry Robinson Molson of the Molson brewery family, then was gifted by his widow's will to the Fraser Institute. Inside pages show the typical characteristics of a book from its era: rippling, an occasional wrinkle, edgewear, and age-toning. The inside rear cover has an ink stamp from previous owner. Beyond that, there are no noteworthy flaws. See pics below. Binding and hinges strong and tight. Overall a very good copy.
